Sit back and enjoy your new hardwood floors by following these cleaning tips.

Hardwood floors are a beautiful, aromatic, and elegant addition to your home! Requiring much less work than carpet, accidental spills are much easier to clean up and your pet’s hair won’t get embedded and tangled in hundreds of fibers. Keep your space happy and healthy without the added dust and particles that accumulate in carpet! Such an investment, however, does require a bit of education. Messing up your hardwood floor’s finish will make them appear dull and they’ll start to lack their original luster.  While a beautiful, low maintenance home addition, you can damage your floors very easily. Depending on what type of wood they’re made out of, you must follow specific cleaning precautions. Read on with us this week to find out how cleaning hardwood floors the right way benefits your home.

Dusting and Sweeping

The accumulation of dust, debris, pet hair, crumbs, and dirt becomes a nuisance beneath your toes if you don’t sweep your hardwood floors often. Eventually, constantly walking on dirty floors forces all those germs into the cracks and crevices, permanently trapping them beneath your floorboards. Use a microfiber mop or cloth to give your floors a good dusting. Prevent scratches and surface damage by scooping up all that debris on a daily basis. Microfiber mops are best for sweeping because most of them use static electricity to trap dirt and other particles. Brooms are effective, however, often times they just push dirt around. Particles are attracted to microfiber, so you’re doing yourself a big favor by using it. This must be done every day.

Vacuuming and Mopping

You should vacuum and mop your floors on a weekly basis. You’ll be able to reach those spaces your daily dusting and sweeping couldn’t touch. Remove dirt from those hard-to-reach areas like corners, and cracks between boards. Put your vacuum on the gentlest setting and wheel it around these difficult areas. Do not use a high setting, you could easily damage your new hardwood floors. Once you’ve finished, it’s time to bring out the mop bucket. Be warned, water and wood don’t mix! Try your best to avoid major spills, and limit the amount of moisture you’re sloshing onto your boards. Your mop should be damp, not soaking. You can also invest in a hardwood floor cleaning spray that gently mists your boards while you wipe them down with your mop. It’s up to you to decide which is best for your floors.
