How often do you clean your coffee maker?

As you’re making your list for spring cleaning, make sure you remember those trusty appliances. Ensure the longevity of your appliances, and learn how to maintain them with the following tips!

Coffee Maker

You might be surprised to learn that your humble coffee maker can be one of the most germ-ridden items in your home. The warm moist environment is the perfect breeding ground for nasty bacteria. Once a month you should run a deep cleaning cycle with the help of white vinegar. Fill the water chamber with an equal mix of vinegar and water, and insert a filter as normal. Begin a brewing cycle, but be sure to turn it off halfway through. After letting the solution sit for about half an hour you can resume the cycle. Once done, remove the filter and toss the vinegar, then run one two two cycles with fresh water to remove any vinegar.

Garbage Disposal

If you’ve noticed an odor emanating from your sink, it might be time to clean out your disposal. You’ll begin by cleaning the blades, pour half a cup of baking soda directly in then add a cup of white vinegar, a cup of salt, and two cups of ice. Make sure your running cold water in and then turn on the disposal. Letting it run until the ice is fully gone. To add a lemony fresh scent, cut a lemon into small segments and run them through your disposal one piece at a time.

Blender

If you’re a smoothie fan you know just how annoying a blender can be to clean, luckily there’s an easier way. Let your blender clean itself! When you’ve finished using it give it a rinse with hot water then fill it with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Make a soap smoothie and then simply give it a good rinse.

Microwave

Scrubbing a dirty microwave can seem like a Sisyphean task, that’s why it’s best to use an easier method! Fill a microwave safe bowl with the juice of a lemon and half a cup of water before microwaving the concoction on high for about three minutes. Then, let the mix sit for about five minutes. The acid in the steam will break down any gunk so all you’ll need to do is gently wipe it out with a sponge or cloth.
