Discover how to keep your patio and deck tidy all summer long!
Summer may only be here unofficially, but the season of outdoor living is upon us. The temperatures are rising, the sun is shining, and our patios are ready. If you have visions of using your patio all summer long, for everything from backyard barbecues to romantic al fresco dinners, you’re going to have to keep it clean and tidy. Luckily, we’ve got some great tips for just how to do that.
Sweep Regularly
The first thing on your cleaning list should be to sweep away the leaves, grass clipping, and other debris (or use a leaf blower). These things quickly pile up and when they get wet, mold grows and they can stain concrete patios and sometimes even stain the wood of your deck. If you have any potted plants, set them on casters and they will be much easier to move when you’re sweeping.
Get To Stains Quickly
If something spills during a party or while you’re relaxing with guests in your outdoor living space, try to clean it up quickly. This also goes for any berry stains and other animal droppings that land there. The sooner you get to it, the easier the stain will be to clean up.
Banish Rain Water
After the rain, tilt furniture so that the water runs off rather than sitting and drying. This will help you avoid water spots and it also keeps mosquitos from laying eggs in the sitting water.
Store Cushions Inside
Even cushions that are meant for outdoor use, with weather-resistant fabric, will fade in the sun and rain and eventually get dingy. When you’re not using the furniture, store the cushions inside. This could mean storing them inside the house, but a better bet is to store them close to where you use them so that you’re not tempted to skip it. It might be worth investing in a container for your patio to safely store them away.
Close The Umbrella
When you’re not out on the patio, remember to close your umbrella. When umbrellas are left open, it gives the dirt a place to settle and the umbrella is more likely to stain. While it may seem like a pain in the neck to close it each time you’re done, and reopen it when you actually want to use it, it is worth it in the end. Cleaning the stains instead will be much more time and labor intensive.
