The holiday season is a wonderful time of year! It’s full of parties, great food, and lots of work making sure your home is perfect. If you have out-of-town guests visiting, or even if you just think someone may need to crash in your guest bedroom unexpectedly, prepping that room for them can impart just a little more holiday cheer.
Ready the Linens
Take the time to change the sheets on the bed, even if they haven’t been slept on. There is nothing quite like slipping into a bed with fresh clean sheets after a long day. Even though they weren’t dirty, they may have gathered dust, gotten a little musty or lost that fresh smell, or even attracted pet fur (perhaps from a pet sleeping on them).
Stock Up on Snacks
Stock the room with some small comforts. This could be as simple as a pitcher of water and a glass, or as elaborate as a small coffee pot for making tea or coffee to warm them up on a cold morning. A small snack, like candy or nuts, can also help them feel at home so they don’t have to wander out to the kitchen in the dark.
Make the Bathroom Sparkle
Provide the toiletry essentials in areas where they’re easy to find. Leave towels and even a robe in the guest bedroom for guests to use. Consider stocking toothbrushes and toothpaste, and travel size body wash and shampoo, in case they forgot theirs. Make sure guests can easily find the extra toilet paper is in the bathroom.
Tailor to Your Guests
When you know ahead of time that you’ll have guests cater to them specifically. Would they like a selection of paperback fiction to read while they visit, or are magazines more their style? If they’re traveling with children, consider leaving a stuffed animal on the bed or putting additional toys in the room!
Redecorate the Room
If you have the time and the budget, consider redecorating the guest bedroom in preparation for the holiday season. You can repaint or wallpaper the room for a fresh, clean look. You could also swap out the furniture. Consider taking a cue from cruise ships and setting up two twin beds. This way, the room can accommodate a variety of guests. If you have a couple staying, you can always push the two beds together and make it up as if it were a larger size mattress.
