Happy New Year! For many people, this is a season of “new year, new you” and usually that translates to new gym memberships, or eating plans, or lifestyle improvements. But what about using this as a time to recommit to a strong house cleaning regimen for 2019? Let’s get started with this checklist of cleaning tasks to carry you through the first month of the year.
Pack Up the Holiday
Sometimes it is hard to say goodbye to the decorations of the holiday season, but take some time to do this now. Start outside with the lights and any blow-up decorations in your yard. Make sure you get all of the fasteners as well as the lights themselves. Make sure they are clean and dry and fold them up neatly before packing them away. Once you move inside, carefully pack any fragile ornaments together and label all of the boxes appropriately. Finally, if you have special holiday linens or dishes, give them one final, thorough cleaning before packing them away. Put everything out of your way, but not so far out of mind that you forget where it is.
Out With the Old
This is the perfect time to go through dressers, closets, and cabinets and take stock of what you have. Maybe you need to make room for new items you were gifted this season, or maybe you just find yourself with more stuff than you use. As you go through your stuff, separate it into items to keep, trash, or donate. Then find a reputable charity to give the donations to.
House Plants
If you have house plants, now is a good time to tend to them, even if they’re fake! Wipe down the leaves with a soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and cobwebs. If your plants are artificial, you can blow off the dust with a blow dryer then vacuum around them.
General Cleaning
Make a to-do list for general cleaning that you can follow this month and refer back to periodically throughout the year. Launder any decorative pillows, throws, and sheets that you have out on couches and beds. Be sure to read the label instructions. Then wipe down and sanitize any hard surfaces, including doorknobs and phones. There have been a lot of hands on your household surfaces during the holiday season, so it’s time to bid those germs goodbye.
