There are many household items that we neglect to clean regularly, and the iron is one of them. Cleaning an iron might seem like an odd task. After all, we aren’t pressing and steaming dirty laundry, right? Well, it turns out that there are several contributing factors to unkempt irons. Fabric softener, dust, starch, and detergent can accumulate over time, and stick to the inside and outside of the soleplate. Do you iron regularly? Learn how to keep it clean with the following tips.
A Two-Part Process
The two essential parts of the iron include the water tank and the soleplate. It’s important to thoroughly clean both parts of the iron for it to function properly. To clean the water tank, fill it completely with water. Once it’s filled, press the steam button until the water evaporates and the tank is empty. Ensure that you use water only, and don’t try to use natural or chemical cleanings solutions.
Ensure that the iron is off and unplugged before you clean the soleplate. Empty the water tank, and wipe the plate with a damp cloth. Make a cleaning paste using one tablespoon of water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Continue to spread the paste onto the plate, and wipe it off using a damp towel. Use a cotton swab to clean the steam holes.
Once a Month
Homeowners should clean their iron once a month, and more depending on their usage. If you’re ironing a shirt and notice that the plate starts to drag, this is an indicator that it’s time to clean the iron again. Similarly, if your iron is burnt on the bottom, a cleaning can help to restore it back to new. Cleaning your household tools allows them to last longer!
