If you are over the heat and humidity of summer, rejoice, because September is finally here! Schools are back in session, and we can finally get all of the sand out of the house and not have it come right back in. Here are six tips to get your home ready for crisp nights, falling leaves, and the holiday season that follows closely behind.
Polish Metal Pieces
Metal accents, from copper bowls to silver candlesticks, are a great addition to any décor, but now is a good time to get out the polish. Over time, these metals tarnish, especially in the humidity of summer. Fortunately, all it usually takes is polish and elbow grease to restore their shine, and that elegance should last you all the way through the holidays.
Dust The Unusual Spots
You’ve likely been keeping up with the dust on your surfaces all summer, so now is the time to get the spots that you may have forgotten: ceilings, walls, baseboards, fan blades, and woodwork. Use a long-handled duster or an attachment on your vacuum to get those hard to reach areas.
Change Linens
Now is a great time to change out those breezy summer linens in favor of something a bit cozier. Swap in those cotton flannel sheets sets and replace your lightweight summer bedspread with a heavier duvet to keep you warm on the cool nights ahead.
Update Drapes
If you opted for breezy, lightweight drapes last spring and over the summer, now is a good time to change them out. Go with heavier curtains that will help keep out drafts, and keep your home feeling warm and elegant for the holidays to come.
Winterize Your Garden
The fall is still a beautiful time to garden, and your landscaping probably has a lot of life left in it, but there are things you can do to get started. Pull out anything that is dead and gone, and separate the spring-blooming perennials that you expect to come back. Doing this now before the ground freezes will give the spring flowers a better chance and save you work down the line.
Rotate Your Wardrobe
Begin pulling your fall and winter clothes out of storage, and packing up the summer stuff you are done with. Go through it all with a discerning eye – if it doesn’t fit or you just don’t like it anymore, give it away rather than hanging on to it for another season.
