Spring is here and that means it’s time to get your outdoor furniture clean and ready for action. After time in the rain and winter weather your outdoor furniture undoubtedly needs sprucing, but depending on the material you may need to take special care to clean it! Once you’ve swept away any loose dirt and leaves, and hosed off water safe pieces, we can get down to the dirty business of cleaning up.
Wood, Teak, and Wicker
For furniture made of wood and wicker cleaning methods can vary, both require a delicate hand to prevent scratches or damage. Use soapy water or a mild oil soap and a soft sponge to carefully remove any built-up grime. For wicker, the tight weave can be difficult to thoroughly clean try using a toothbrush to get in between the cracks. With teak, you can use a teak cleaner or a diluted solution of laundry detergent. If your wood or wicker has developed difficult stains you can try sanding the surface to restore its luster.
Plastic
Plastic outdoor furniture is a breeze to clean up! Once you’ve hosed it down apply a simple household cleaning spray and wipe away the dirt with a damp cloth or sponge. While you don’t want to use anything too abrasive you can scrub as hard as you need with a cloth.
Metal
To clean metal, gather a sponge or soft bristled brush along with a bucket of warm water and dish soap. With a quick wash, metal furniture will be good as new and ready for your next party. If you notice any rust, scrub it with steel wool and consider repainting to seal your metal from further damage.
Fabric
When cleaning outdoor fabrics the best course of action is to use a light solution of dish soap and warm water and then letting the item air dry. If you are able to reach the manufacturer for better cleaning instructions you may be able to machine wash some outdoor fabrics on a gentle cycle.
Removing Mold
If you notice mold growing on your outdoor furniture you’ll want to remove it as quickly as possible. If you’ve already begun your cleaning process make sure to let your furniture fully dry before trying to remove any mold. Begin by dry scrubbing to remove as much of the mold as possible. Then scrub the affected areas with a hard brush and undiluted white vinegar.
