Ironing is a tedious chore that keeps our clothes presentable and neat. Whether you’ve been ironing for three weeks or thirty years, you’re bound to have made a few mistakes. This week we’re discussing a few of the most common ironing errors that are holding you back.
Forgetting to Clean the Iron
An iron isn’t the first thing you may think of cleaning when it comes to cleaning household appliances and gadgets. Melted fibers and other residues that are left on your iron can stain or create snags in fabrics. To clean, make sure the iron is completely cooled, and use either a baking soda paste or special iron cleaning paste to clean the iron’s soleplate.
Using Too Much Heat
Too much heat on your clothes can damage delicate fabrics. If you want to preserve the garment, make sure that you lower the heat so it doesn’t damage sensitive fabrics. To avoid using too much heat, identify the clothes that are delicate and iron them first. Fabrics like cotton and linen are much more durable.
Ironing Fabrics That Are Too Dry
If you’ve ever dealt with pesky wrinkles in fabrics that just didn’t seem to come out, this could be your problem. If clothes are too dry they may be difficult to reshape; slightly damp clothes are great to iron. If you accidentally leave clothes in the dryer or out on the line too long, use the steam burst feature on your iron to give your fabric a little moisture.
Storing Your Iron With Water In It
It’s imperative to always empty the iron’s water tank before putting it away. Leaving water in the tank can become tepid and leak into the internal parts, damaging them and discoloring the plate. This is a common mistake that is easy to forget about.
Using Distilled Water Water
While your mother or grandmother may have told you not to put tap water in your iron, these days irons are up to the test. Purchasing distilled water for your iron really isn’t necessary unless your local area’s water is hard; if it is, use a 50/50 mix.
