6 Household Items You Should Be Changing Frequently

Tabla de contenidos

Effectively maintaining a household involves keeping things around us fresh and clean.

Maintaining your home is never an easy task, so it’s easy to let some basic swap-outs fall to the wayside. If you are not the most proactive homeowner and looking to make your household a cleaner place to live, here are 6 basic household items that you should be changing frequently.

Air Filters

Do you frequently run the air conditioning and heat in your home? Do you have any pets? Do you have seasonal allergies? If you answered yes to one or all of these, it’s important that you swap out the air filter in your home frequently. Change the filter for your HVAC unit every 3 months as a rule of thumb, every 2 months if you have pets, and every month if you have allergies.

Many people forget that pillows are one of the dirtiest places in the home, but they still change their bedsheets once a week! Pillows should be replaced every 3 years and washed every 3 months to keep them clean and dirt-free. Allergy sufferers should replace pillows and wash pillows more frequently, just like with air filters.

Make a habit of changing your fire alarm batteries and carbon monoxide batteries twice a year. Set an alarm and write it on the calendar and never put it off. These two pieces of equipment can be the difference between life and death, and you never want to put your family’s safety at risk.

Many people don’t think of this as a part of their household that they should be regularly replacing, but every piece of makeup you own comes with an expiration date. Mascaras should only be used for three months at a time. Powder cosmetics can last up to three years, but cream products only last a year after opening.

If your kitchen sponge is smelly or slimy, it’s time to toss it out. Your sponge might have yeast and mold inside of it, thanks to the warm and wet water it’s always around. In this situation, it’s probably doing more harm than good!

Water Pitcher Filters

Everyone tries to change their water pitcher filters regularly, but often the 3 month limit gets stretched to 6 or 9 months. If you don’t change your water filter often enough, it will lose its effectiveness.
