Green thumbs of the world rejoice, for spring is finally here. As you prepare to bring your garden back to life, ensure that you have the right tools for the job. Here are a few ways you can keep your garden gear in top shape all summer long.
What You’ll Need
If you’re a seasoned gardener, you’ve most likely been using the same tools for several years. Over time, they’ve become worn down with dirt and debris, which makes them less effective. When scrubbing your shovels and rakes, you’ll need your garden hose, a large bucket, gloves, a putty knife, steel wool, and a cleaning solution.
Start With The Hose
Use the garden hose to spray any loose dirt off of the tools. Continue to moisten the tools with a steady stream of water, and scrape off any stubborn dirt with the putty knife.
Scrape Away Rust
Rust eats away at your garden tools, diminishing their use over time. If you spot any rust, use the steel wool to scrub it clean.
The Tools Need a Bath
Fill the large bucket with warm water and your choice of cleaning solution. You can purchase a solution at your local hardware store, or make your own from natural ingredients. Once you’ve removed any dirt, grime, or rust you can place all of the tools into the bucket. Allow them to soak for about 30 minutes.
And to Be Dried Off
Once your tools have had a warm bath, rinse them with clean water and dry with a towel. Putting the tools away wet might cause them to develop more rust.
