For better or for worse, we are nearing the end of summer. So while you’re contemplating sweater season and pumpkin spice everything, now is also a good time to think about fall cleaning and how you might want to change up your cleaning routine. One way to make a change could be to ditch the chemical-based cleansers because of their negative environmental impacts. If you’re considering dumping chemical cleaners in favor of more eco-friendly alternatives, here are five ways to clean your home with vinegar and baking soda.
In The Bathroom
Use baking soda and vinegar to get your toilet bowl sparkling. Sprinkle a cup full of baking soda in the toilet bowl and let it sit for at least an hour. Add a cup of white vinegar to the bowl and let it sit for a while longer before flushing it all away.
In The Oven
The oven is another kitchen appliance that you can clean with baking soda. Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and spread it on the bottom of your oven. Allow it to sit for a couple of hours or overnight, then scrape it off. Wipe down the oven with a clean cloth to remove any remaining baking soda.
In The Laundry room
Add Baking soda to your wash cycle to help clean your clothes. The baking soda will help soften your clothes and will remove any lingering odors.
In The Dishwasher
When it comes time to clean your dishwasher, vinegar will help you get the job done. Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl with two cups of white vinegar and set it on the top rack of your dishwasher. Run the dishwasher with only the vinegar bowl for a full cycle to get rid of lingering odors and bacteria.
In Between Your Tiles
The grout between tiles – on the floor, on the backsplash, in the shower – can be hard to keep clean. Especially in moist environments, mold can grow quickly on grout. To get rid of it, spray it with a mixture of one part carbonated water and one part white vinegar. For really stubborn grime, add two parts baking soda to the water and vinegar mix so that it forms a paste. Let the paste sit on the grout for 15 minutes before scrubbing it off.
