4 Simple Ways to Make Your House Smell Great

Incorporating house plants throughout your home is a great way to freshen up the space.
Incorporating houseplants throughout your home is a great way to freshen up each room.

We all know that a room that looks clean is nice, but a home that smells good is the best. Whether you’re doing some spring cleaning of your own, or you’ve recently had Misty Clean complete a deep clean, here are four ways to keep that tidy home smelling fresh.

Houseplants

Bringing the great outdoors indoors does more than brighten up a room, it can make the room smell nice too. As long as they get enough light, small herbs (such as rosemary and basil) thrive on windowsills, even in small apartments. They smell great, and as an added bonus you can even use them for cooking! If you have more space, geraniums or ornamental citrus trees are pretty and nice smelling. Do your research if you have kids or pets, however, to make 100% sure the plant is non-toxic to them.

Essential Oil Diffusers

Essential oils offer delicious but subtle aromas that fill a room and are a nice way to go green, instead of buying air fresheners in a store. They come in a variety of scents and you can even mix them to create a custom aroma. Diffusers are pretty cheap online, or you can DIY a spray by combining the oil(s) with ¾ cup of water and 2 TBSP real vanilla extract in a spray bottle. Like with houseplants, do your research on oils to make sure you’re choosing one that won’t harm your pets.

Candle Warmers

Anyone who has ever been near a candle store knows that scented candles come in an amazing variety of aromas. Candle warmers give us all the greatness of scented candles without the worry about open flames. You can sit actual candles on them or warm scented wax disks in a tray. As an added benefit, candles that are warmed instead of burned hold their scents longer.

Simmer Pots

A simmer pot is another simple and easy alternative to commercial air fresheners. Put a small sauce pan of water on the stove and add whatever spices or herbs you have that smell nice (like a cinnamon stick, some orange peels, and vanilla). Then let it simmer on low filling your whole house with a pleasant aroma. Keep an eye on it as the water evaporates and add more if needed. This is a great way to make your kitchen smell nice as you’re checking off your daily housekeeping chores.
